Splurge vs Save: Classic Black Bag.

Splurge vs Save Title

I’ve been craving a classic black bag for quite some time now. And I’ve had my eye on everything- from Chanel, to Celine, to Marc by Marc Jacobs. Pretty much anything with a somewhat insane price tag- I wanted. I’ve always been one to pay money on a nice purse. At the age of 13, I bought my very first Juicy Couture wallet [and was later gifted the matching purse for Channukah]- despite the fact that I had no money to put in it, I was thrilled to have a “designer” label handbag/wallet duo. Since then, I’ve been hooked. Buying Marc by Marc Jacobs handbags has been a ritual for me since 16- buying a new one for each birthday. And I know this sounds silly, and reading it back makes me sound like a spoiled rich girl, but I’m not. I would save up my money and splurge on a good quality handbag each year, and each purse is now a representation of the hard work that I put in. But now that I am 19, and living on my own, and paying my own rent- that ritual will have to stop. And the first step in ending my addiction to pricier purses, was buying one on a budget. It wasn’t until I was in H&M yesterday that I even considered getting a “budget-friendly” handbag.

I had had my eye on the Michael Kors Large Selma Satchel for a while, and was planning on buying that sometime over the holidays. But, with having rent to pay, and knowing that I shouldn’t survive off of only pasta and pudding, I made a better judgement. I went into H&M, knowing that they have decent quality items that generally resemble higher end pieces, and looked at their handbags. I found one that I liked [similar to this one, I couldn’t find the exact one online- mine was around $30 instead of $50, but doesn’t have the front pocket on it] and now I am the proud owner of a new black handbag. Now I don’t know how long this one will last me, but I’ve realized that it will be a well worn piece. If I need to get a new one in a year, then so it goes.

So what are your thoughts. Splurge, or save on a classic handbag? I’m still not sure where I stand on this.

  1. Such a toughie! I’m a lover and owner of many designer handbags. To me I think they are better quality. It’s not that I think I’m better and won’t buy a cheaper version, when I have wanted to buy one the quality and fabric/ material looks so cheaply designed : / I should keep my eyes peeled for more affordable bags, but it’s so hard when I’m a glutton for spending a crap load of money on a bag.

P.S. Actually really like the H&M one, have to see if it’s here in London xx

  2. I normally like to go with designer, but NOT full price! I found a BCBG bag for 10$ on Rue La La, and all of my coach purses are from outlet malls for less than $70. They def last longer – but lower priced bags can look just as good! Great post – and jealous of your bags!
